41º Aniversario. ¡¡ PERLA !! Critica original de la revista Rolling Stone americana al primer disco de Santana.

Carlos Santana es uno de los tres nuevos guitarristas que lindan con la pureza de B. B. King. Sus únicos dos contemporáneos son Eric Clapton y Michael Bloomfield, pero Santana toca música latina y no hay otras bandas latinas lideradas por guitarras. Lo paradójico de Santana ha sido su aceptación por parte de una audiencia joven a la que le gusta Grand Funk y Ten Years After cuando deberían ser disfrutados por personas a las que les gustan Chicago y John Mayall.
El corazón de Santana está encargado por el organista Gregg Roli y el bajista Dave Brown, que sostienen el ritmo sobre el que la percusión puede variar y rebotar. Los timbales, las congas (puertorriqueñas) y los tambores marcan el ritmo de Brown y entonces Santana mismo entra a hacer sus declaraciones en la guitarra principal.
Carlos Santana es un chicano y adora la guitarra, que siempre ha sido utilizada mucho en la música mexicana. El ha perfeccionado un estilo asociado con el blues y el cool jazz y lo cruzó con música latina. Funciona bien, porque la banda es una de las unidades más ajustadas que pasaron por un estudio de grabación. De las bandas blancas, sólo Chicago puede igualar su percusión, pero Chicago se sostiene por vientos, mientras Santana se sostiene por timbales y congas.
"Oye Como Va" es el punto culminante del álbum. La única debilidad es ese órgano fino de Roli ha sido mezclado demasiado bajo. Esto es un viaje diferente para Santana, mucho más cerca de los estilos de los músicos más jóvenes de Puerto Rico en Nueva York, como la Orchestra DJ y el Rayo Olan, y más lejos del viaje a lo Sly que dominó su primer álbum. A menos que te guste realmente la música latina o parte del período mediano de Herbie Mann and the Jazz Messengers, puede que no seas capaz de disfrutar de este corte o del álbum en general.
Abraxas es una de las nuevas producciones independientes para Columbia hecha en el estudio de Wally Heider, y el bajista Dave Brown hizo mucha de la ingeniería. El álbum que él ha ayudado a sacar puede hacer perder a Santana parte de su audiencia más joven, pero se va a ganar el respeto de personas interesadas en el jazz latino. En Abraxas, Santana es un Mono Santamaria popularizado y ellos quizás hagan para la música latina lo que Chuck Berry hizo para el blues.
Las principales bandas latinas en este país tocan por 100 dólares la noche, y cuando las ves no te podés quedar quieto. Si Santana logra llegar a la audiencia pop con Abraxas, entonces habrá quizás espacio para que los maestros viejos como La Lupe y Puente puedan trabajarlo fuera de las salas de baile. Pero por ahora, Abraxas es un boogie total y la música está bien de principio a fin.

Neil Young skipped most of the acoustic set (the exceptions being his compositions "Mr. Soul" and "Wonderin'") and joined Crosby, Stills & Nash, but refused to be filmed during the electric set; by his own report, Young felt the filming was distracting both performers and audience from the music.
